Jonas Gustavsson 2012-13 Mask

Jonas Gustavsson of the Detroit Red Wings(born Oct. 24, 1984 in Danderyd, Sweden.)

Artist: David Gunnarsson

From Dave: “Since Jonas is the Monster, and Detroit is the motor city, we transformed the mask into a living monster hot rod! So many details all over the mask, the windscreen is the eyes in the forehead, and the mouth on the bumper on the chin, and Red Wings paint job on the hood…and a big bad V8 engine with big exhaust pipes on the sides…In the backgrund the Detroit skyline, and the traffic light is showing green, ready…gooo! Burnout…It is so much fun to work with Jonas, we have made maaaaany masks together since Jonas was a kid back in the 90s. Love to work with you Jonas!"

Richard Bachman 2012-13 Mask

Richard Bachman of the Dallas Stars (born July 25, 1987 in Salt Lake City, UT.)

Artist: David Gunnarsson

2/17/13: Bachman is wearing a new mask, article here.

From InGoal Magazine

From Dave: "Richard and I made a lot of thinking and brainstorming for this artwork. It is a tribute to Stephen King, because he sometimes also uses the name Richard Bachman when he writes. To make it even more scary we decided to use only one color all over the mask, and it is all painted in a scary mix of calm paint and an uncomfortable feeling all over the mask. It is all created with old school airbrush paint mixed with oil paint tech. The left side has just an evil sinister feeling, and if you look close into the star you find the same carpet as in the hotel! On the right side we present the rage.

In addition to the more easily recognizable characters from The Shining, including Jack Nicholson, on the mask’s right side, Gunnarsson integrated more subtle references on the left portion of the mask, even working the patterns from the carpet in the hotel featured in The Shining with the star of the Dallas Stars logo to create a “sinister feeling.”

Chris Mason, 2012-13 Mask

Chris Mason of the Nashville Predators (born April 20, 1976 in Red Deer, AB.)

Artist: Steve Nash of EyeCandyAir

Article found at InGoal Magazine.

Mason is set to debut another amazing mask from EyeCandyAir, and just like his first Jets mask, it borrows from one of his favourite bands by using an Iron Maiden Eddie.

In fact, the Eddie in question is from the Egyptian-themed cover of the band’s Powerslave album, which also produced the single Aces High and corresponding Eddie included on last year’s mask. It’s a theme that works perfectly because the album covers were created originally by artist Derek Riggs, who has inspired the mask’s artist, Steve Nash, throughout his own career.

As for the backplate, which is often used by goalies for personal messages, Mason instead went with a tribute to Nashville by using artwork that is from the official City Seal and can also be seen on the city’s flag.
